If you've been watching college basketball this year, you know that Wake Forest Demon Deacon coach Dino Gaudio is also very good.
Sure it helps to have a stocked group of talented big men with emerging freshman Al-Farouq Aminu improving daily. It never hurts to have a potential national player of the year in Teague that is willing to play as a team player. And sure it is rare to have the depth that Wake Forest has this year at every single position. But the talent pool in college basketball is reflective of a ton of hard work and commitment from Dino and the entire Wake Forest program to retain recruits and develop a young team.
So how is he lucky? Lucky people are not some mythical beings. They exist. They simply have a make-up that lets them create positive situations. They typically have approachable personalities, a lack of anxiety, and a contagious optimism. They tend to make confident and effective decisions based on intuition. They also tend to cope with and learn from setbacks while expecting good fortune. Sound familiar? To me that is a profile that matches what I have seen from Dino Gaudio on the WFU sidelines and beyond.
So Dino is lucky. Not many people have been blessed with those gifts. Coach Gaudio strikes me as grounded, rational and humble even during halftime interviews. (aka the most troubling anti-tradition and anti-oldschool sellout invention of all time) In a season that so far tops any Deacon season I can recall, being humble in itself is admirable. But he has the intellectual nice guy appeal of a Herb Sendek mashed up with a splash of Jimmy V charisma. He speaks respectfully of his opponents after disarming them with 4 quarters of strategic attack. He craftfully masks any coach-speak cliches with a sincere answer and sense of realism. He seems to have a strategy that extends well beyond any single game plan, yet he has proven to understand the x and o tactics required to win the games in the path toward that end goal. This is reflected by the players on the court. They clearly are buying in. They absolutely expect to win. If they follow Dino's lead this year, and mimic his traits behind his 'manufactured' luck - they will win a lot.
With Dino's luck around - I'll bet on Black (and Old Gold).
